SAN ANTONIO ? Junior left-hander Kris Ruepke tossed two-hit ball over six innings and the UTSA offense scored in double figures for the third time in the last four games in a 14-2 victory against Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
The Roadrunners, who won for the sixth time in their last seven games to improve to 6-2, completed the weekend sweep and set a school record for runs (48) and margin of victory (44) in a four-game series.
Ruepke, who was unable to get an out in his first start of the year on Monday against Texas Tech, was spectacular in a 76-pitch gem. The Adel, Iowa, native fanned four, walked just one and retired the final 10 hitters he faced in improving to 1-1 on the season. Senior Mark Ruffin struck out two in a scoreless seventh in relief of Ruepke and sophomores Andy Benedict and Zach Calhoon closed out the game for the Roadrunners.
All nine starters on offense reached base by hit, walk or hit by pitch on the day and four others saw action late and did the same.
Junior shortstop James Keithley reached base in his first five plate appearances and led the Roadrunners offense with three hits. Meanwhile, senior catcher Zach Etheredge and sophomore third baseman Ryan Rummel both had a pair of hits and three RBIs. Junior right fielder Aaron Powell was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
UTSA got on the board first on Powell's run-scoring single with one down in the second. The Roadrunners added their second run of the day one frame later when sophomore designated hitter Tim Palincsar brought home Rummel with a fielder's choice liner off the leg of Pioneers starter Ryan Lynch.
Two more runs came home in the fifth and UTSA put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth. After Sacred Heart (0-4) plated its first run in the eighth, the Roadrunners responded with a five spot to push the lead to 14-1. The Pioneers scored the game's final tally in the ninth on a base hit and three walks.
Lynch (0-1) gave up a pair of runs on five hits and walked four in four innings, while Tyler Santos was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
UTSA concludes its season-opening 10-game home stand when it hosts Kansas State (3-3) in a two-game series at Wolff beginning Tuesday night. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
