HUNTSVILLE ? The UTSA women’s basketball team won its sixth game in row and sent Sam Houston State to its 15th consecutive defeat with a 72-48 victory on Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Junior forward Onika Anderson posted her third consecutive double-double with a team-high 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Roadrunners (14-6, 6-1 SLC). Meanwhile, junior guard Monica Gibbs just missed a triple-double with 11 points, a game-best nine assists and eight boards. Junior forward Ryba Pawlaczyk hauled in a career-high 12 rebounds and senior guard Terrie Davis added 11 points.
Whitney Smith led the Bearkats (1-20, 0-8 SLC) with a game-high 15 points, while Brittany Brooks chipped in with 11.
The Roadrunners scored the first six points of the second half to push their lead to 18 (40-22) with 16:37 to go. A Gibbs layup gave UTSA its largest lead of the game at 61-37 with 8:34 remaining. A layup by Brooks cut the deficit to 20 with three minute left, but it would be the closet the Bearkats would get the rest of the night.
UTSA and Sam Houston State were tied at seven with 13:58 to go in the first half, but the Roadrunners used a 21-1 run over the next seven minutes to take a commanding 28-8 lead. The Bearkats ended the half on a 14-6 run to trim the lead to 34-22 at the half.
The Roadrunners return home for an SLC matchup against Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable channel 50.
