SAN ANTONIO ? Junior forward Onika Anderson posted her second consecutive double-double with a game highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds to pace the UTSA women’s basketball team to a 65-56 win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
Freshman guard Jordan Stark added 10 points off the bench, while senior forward Amanda Foster and junior guard Monica Gibbs chipped in with nine points apiece for the Roadrunners (13-6, 5-1 SLC).
Gibbs, who also dished out a game-high six assists to push her career total to 381, passed Rhonda Hoffman for second place on UTSA’s all-time assists list.
Shaye Montgomery and Jade Davis led the Islanders (6-13, 3-3 SLC) with 14 points, while Elisa Beagle added 10 and led the team with seven rebounds.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored the first basket of the second half to increase its lead to 25-22. UTSA then regained the edge for good, using a 6-0 run with 15:28 left to go up 36-30. The Islanders pulled within 42-40 on a jumper by Montgomery at the nine-minute mark, but it would be the closet A&M-Corpus Christi would get for the reminder of the game. The Roadrunners used a 14-5 spurt to push their lead to nine (54-45) with less than five minutes to play and then made free throws late in the game to hold on for the nine-points victory.
UTSA jumped ahead 17-7 on senior guard Terrie Davis’ 3-pointer with 8:45 to go in the first half. A pair of free throws by Sarah Davidson cut the lead to six (17-11) at the seven-minute mark, but the Roadrunners extended their lead back to double-digits when Anderson connected on a layup with 3:08 left. The Islanders closed the half on an 11-0 run to take a 23-22 advantage into the locker room.
UTSA hits the road on Thursday, Feb. 7, for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Sam Houston State.
