McNeese State trips up UTSA, 52-49, on Thursday night

LAKE CHARLES, La. ? Juniors Onika Anderson and Monica Gibbs double-doubles weren’t enough, as the UTSA women’s basketball team dropped its second game in row with a 52-49 loss at McNeese State on Thursday night in Southland Conference action.

Gibbs posted her fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Anderson collected her team-leading eighth double-double with a dozen points and game-best 13 boards. Freshman guard Whitney York added 10 points for the Roadrunners (18-8, 10-3 SLC).

Courtnee Hollins and Shante Perry led the Cowgirls (8-19, 6-7 SLC) with 13 points apiece, while Brittany Boone added 10.

Hollins pulled McNeese State within two (30-28) with 15:17 remaining in the second half. UTSA then answered with a 9-2 spurt to extend its lead to nine (39-30) midway through the frame. The Cowgirls took their first lead of the contest courtesy of an 11-2 run with four minutes left. York nailed a couple of free throws to make the score 47-46, but Perry’s 3-pointers from the top of the key extended the lead to 50-46 with 1:19 to go. York again got the Roadrunners within one at 50-49. However, Lenissa Lopez made good on her two freebies to give the Cowgirls a three advantage with 13 seconds remaining. Senior Terrie Davis’ 3-point attempt fell short as the game clock expired.

UTSA jumped to the early nine-point lead (19-10) when Anderson connected on a baseline jumper with 10:35 to play in the first half. Boone netted the next five points to cut the Roadrunners deficit to four (19-15) at the seven-minute mark. A York short jumper with 4:05 to go gave UTSA a 25-19 edge, but Perry’s layup got the Cowgirls within four at the break.

The Roadrunners conclude their two-game road trip at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
