Sophomore Rudi Cantu went 4-for-7 in Saturday's doubleheader.

EL PASO ? Sophomore Rudi Cantu went 4-for-7 with an RBI, but it was not enough, as UTEP swept a doubleheader from UTSA, 6-0 and 8-4, on Saturday afternoon at Helen of Troy Field. The Miners improved to 9-4 on the year, while the Roadrunners fell to 3-6.

Cantu went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in an 8-4 loss in game two, but the Roadrunners allowed four unearned runs during a six-run fifth inning, as UTEP rallied for the four-run victory.

Stacie Townsend and Rachel Schaeffer hit back-to-back home runs in the second to give UTEP a 2-0 lead, but UTSA answered in the top of the third, as Sitka doubled home Cantu, who reached on an infield single.

The Roadrunners grabbed a 4-2 lead with a three-run fourth. UTSA loaded the bases with one out behind a single by sophomore Mercedes Hessel, a fielder’s choice error off the bat of senior Kim Chavez and a single by senior Kourtney Jones. Junior Leanne Risberg drew a walk to force the tying run home and Cantu then plated Chavez with a single up the middle. However, Jones was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second. A walk to freshman Danye Holmes loaded the bases and brought a pitching change. Sitka then drew another walk to drive in Risberg.

UTEP plated six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. The dagger came on an infield error that saw two runners score to give the Miners a 6-4 lead they would never relinquish.

Nichole Tunget (3-1) allowed just one hit in 3.1 innings of relief in earning the win. Amber Bennett had two hits and Jennifer Stalter drove in a pair to lead UTEP at the plate.

Stacie Townsend (4-2) tossed a four-hit shutout in game one, a 6-0 victory for the Miners. Simone Holland went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs to lead an 11-hit output for UTEP.

Cantu had two of the Roadrunners’ four hits in the opener, while Risberg and Jones also broke through against Townsend.

The Miners struck for four runs in their first at-bat, as Holland singled home Bennett, who reached on a double, and Ashley Perez tripled home a pair to put the Miners up quickly, 3-0. Camilla Carrera pushed Perez home on a double down the left field line and UTEP never looked back.

The Miners tacked on a pair on Holland’s two-run blast in the second and cruised from there.

Game three is set for noon (CT) on Sunday.
