SAN ANTONIO ? Texas State used balanced scoring to end UTSA’s winning streak at 10 games with a 85-79 win on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (18-7, 10-2 SLC) were led by junior forward Onika Anderson’s game highs of 23 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Monica Gibbs chipped in with 18 and dished out four assists. Senior guard Terrie Davis added 13 points on the strength of three 3-pointers and freshman guard Whitney York scored 12 and matched Anderson with seven boards.
Joyce Ekworomadu led the Bobcats (18-8, 12-1 SLC) with a game-best 23 points. Meanwhile, Brooke DeGrate and Kim Cessna chipped in with 14 and 13, respectively, and Aimee Hilburn grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Texas State built its lead to as many as nine points using an 8-5 run to open the second half. However, a steal by York started a fast break and Anderson was on the receiving end that capped off an 11-0 spurt by the Roadrunners to tie the game at 54 with 12:31 left. Ekworomadu’s 3-pointer from right wing gave Texas State a six-point lead (71-65) with just under eight minutes to play. York nailed a pair of free throws to cut the Bobcats' deficit to two at the two-minute mark, but Texas State clinched the game down the stretch with free throws to hold on for the six-point win.
UTSA jumped to an early 8-0 lead to begin the first half, but Texas State pulled within three on a pair of DeGrate 3-pointers. The Bobcats took their first lead of game at 20-19 when Ekworomadu was good on a bucket midway through the frame and the Bobcats would not trail the rest of the way. A DeGrate trey and a breakaway layup highlighted a 7-0 run by Texas State that pushed the lead to 32-25 with 5:16 to go in the stanza. York pulled UTSA within three after completing a three-point play with 57 seconds remaining, but Tamarra Evans-Slugs’ three ball gave the Bobcats a 46-40 edge at the half.
UTSA hits the road next week for a pair of league contests at McNeese State (Thursday, Feb. 28) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Saturday, March 1).
