DMR highlights day one effort at SLC Indoor Championships

The distance medley relay team of sophomores Faith Barlow, Jessica Jones and Dana Mecke and freshman Jayde James finished third to highlight day one action for the UTSA women’s track & field team at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Friday at Bill Yeoman Field House.

The quartet passed the baton to a time of 12:18.37 to earn the bronze medal for the second straight year for the Roadrunners. Lamar won a tight race in 12:13.96, while Sam Houston State was second in 12:17.45.

James, Jones and Mecke also had a successful evening in the preliminary running events, as all three stayed alive for Saturday’s finals.

Mecke was impressive, winning her heat in both the 800 meters and mile. The Smithson Valley High product clocked a 2:19.30 in the 800m and a 5:12.27 in the mile, both the fastest times of the day.

Jones skimmed the 60m hurdles in 8.75 in the prelims and advanced into the final round with an 8.84, which was good for second in her heat and fourth overall.

James moved through the 800m field with the third-fastest time in her heat, a 2:22.46, which was the ninth-best performance of the day.

In final field event action, senior Brittany Epps leaped to an 18-5 measure to place seventh in the long jump, while freshman Aimee Jonas tallied 3,147 points to finish eight in the pentathlon. Senior Kari Michalik posted 3,099 points for 11th in the pentathlon and junior Rikki Gray cleared 5-2 ? to tie for 10th in the high jump.

UTSA has scored nine points through six events and stands in ninth place after Friday’s action. Stephen F. Austin leads with 50, followed by Texas State (43.5) and Sam Houston State (32).

Day two of the SLC Indoor Championships gets underway at 11 a.m. with the triple jump, while running events begin at 1:30 p.m.
