SAN ANTONIO ? Senior Terrie Davis led a balanced UTSA attack with a game-high 20 points to lead the Roadrunners women’s basketball team to a 71-59 win against Southeastern Louisiana in Southland Conference action on Thursday night at the Convocation Center.
Junior guard Monica Gibbs, who dished out a game-high seven assists, set UTSA’s all-time assists record with 408, breaking Tammy Rogers’ mark of 406. Gibbs also added 15 points and hauled in eight rebounds for the Roadrunners (16-6, 8-1 SLC).
Junior forward Onika Anderson and freshman guard Whitney York chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively, and senior forward Amanda Foster led the team with nine rebounds.
Brooke Necaise led the Lady Lions (9-14, 3-7 SLC) with 12 points, while Bethany Sinclair added 10.
York, who closed out the first half scoring the final six points, opened the second stanza by scoring the first five points to give UTSA its largest lead of the game at 48-26 with 18:41 remaining. The Lady Lions closed the gap to 13 (50-37) when Jameica Gross connected on a layup at the 14-minute mark. The Roadrunners increased their lead back to 22 when freshman Amber Gregg capped off a 9-0 run with 12:31 left. Necaise’s fourth 3-pointer of the game cut the deficit to 63-48 with 7:51 to go. With less than three minutes to play, Gibbs’ layup gave UTSA a 19-point advantage and the Roadrunners went on for the 12-point victory.
UTSA jumped out to a 13-4 lead when Foster connected on a layup with 15:25 to go in the first half. The Lady Lions pulled to within 13-11 on Zevy Ivory’s short jumper at the 13-minute mark. The Roadrunners then used a 20-7 run over the next eight minutes to push the edge to 33-18. Sinclair’s layup pulled Southeastern Louisiana within nine with 2:21 to play in the frame, but UTSA ended the half on an 8-0 spurt and went into the locker room up 43-26.
The Roadrunners conclude their three-game home stand against Nicholls State at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
