AUSTIN ? UTSA junior Leanne Risberg slugged a two-run home run, but No. 22 Texas pounded out 10 runs on 14 hits, including three long balls, to take the rubber game of a three-game series, 10-2, on Sunday afternoon at McCombs Field. The Longhorns improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory, while the Roadrunners fell to 1-2.
Texas right-hander Megan Denny allowed two runs on four hits and struck out nine in four innings of work to earn her second win of the weekend in the run-rule-shortened game.
The Longhorns struck for three runs in the bottom of the first. Two runs scored on a single and throwing error off the bat of Amy Hooks, while Hooks came around to score later on another UTSA miscue.
A Tallie Thrasher base hit plated Desiree Williams with the fourth run in the bottom of the second.
Risberg launched her two-run blast to left field in the top of the third inning, plating senior Lindsay Perry, who reached on a single to left to start the frame, to cut the deficit in half.
Texas answered with a three-run shot off the bat of Shelby Savony in the bottom of the frame to push the lead to 7-2. Loryn Johnson singled home Kori Cook, who tripled, to make it 8-2 after three innings.
Brittany Chalk clubbed a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to push the advantage to 10-2.
Senior Janeille Nickels (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in two-plus innings.
The Roadrunners return to action next weekend at the Hotel Encanto Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M.
