Mecke, Brooks highlight UTSA effort at adidas Classic

LINCOLN, Neb. ? Sophomores Dana Mecke and Kim Brooks posted top-five finishes to highlight action for the UTSA women’s track & field team on Saturday at the adidas Classic.

Mecke clocked a season-best 2:15.84 to finish fourth among collegians and fifth overall in a 40-person field of 800-meter runners. That time bettered her previous season best of 2:19.60 posted at the Texas Tech Invitational on Jan. 19. Freshman Jayde James was 12th in 2:21.62.

It was a busy day for Mecke, as she also placed 12th in the mile in a season-best 5:03.91 clocking.

Brooks raced to a 1:26.84 clocking to finish third in her section and fifth overall in the 600-yard dash. The younger sister of UTSA All-American Larry Brooks was just five seconds off the winning time of 1:21.84 posted by Nebraska’s Sheryl Morgan.

The 1,600m relay squad passed the baton to a season-best 3:53.96 to take second in their section and sixth overall out of 27 teams.

Senior Brittany Epps leaped to an 18-4 ? measure to place seventh in the long jump.

The Roadrunners return to action on Feb. 22-23 at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in Houston.
