UTSA splits pair of home matches on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’stennis team collected its first win of the 2008 season with a 5-2 victory against St. Edward’s on Saturday. Earlier in the day, the Roadrunners (1-3) fell to Laredo CommunityCollege, 4-3. Both matches were played at the UTSA Tennis Center.

In the afternoon match, the Hilltoppers (0-2) took two of three in doubles play and took an early 1-0 lead.

UTSA bounced back to win five of the six matches. Junior Robin Fernandes and sophomore Rodrigo Morgado tiedthe match at two with their wins at No. 1 and No. 2, repectively.Freshman Max Stratmann recorded his first collegiate win at the No. 3 position and put the Roadrunners up 3-2. FreshmanDaniel Moreiras, who also picked up his first win of the year, clinched the match with a three-set win against Bernard Lancaster at No. 5.Moreiras dropped the first set 6-1 but rebounded to win the next two sets,6-0, 7-5. Senior Adam Becker was the squad's other winner, as he came from behind for a 6-7,6-0, 7-5 triumph at the No. 4 slot.

In the day's first match, UTSA dropped a heartbreaker to the Palominos. The Roadrunners held a 3-2 lead, but Laredo CC rallied to win the match with a pair of hard-fought, three-set victories at the No. 1 andNo. 2 singles slots.

UTSA is back in action next weekend when it travels to Lincoln, Neb., for three matches beginning on Friday, Feb. 15, at Nebraska.
