SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA women’s tennis team collected its first win of the 2008 campaign with a five-hour, 4-3 victory against Middle Tennessee on Friday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
“This was a good win for us, because we beat a tough team.” head coachErin Boisclair said after the home-opening victory. “It just goes to show how important winning thedoubles point is. The girls really played well and were focused out there onthe court. This win is a momentum builder, as we face SMU on Sunday.”
The Roadrunners (1-2) picked up the doubles point after sweeping the Blue Raiders (1-4). Junior Nathalie Wallin and sophomore Holly Phillips got things started for UTSA with an 8-5 win at the No. 3 spot. Senior Tanya Hasking and junior Monika Drabkova clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 victory at No. 2. Junior Karen Scida and freshman Caroline Dedering were victorious in their match at the No. 1 position.
In singles action, UTSA extended its lead to 3-0 after Scida and Wallin came off the court with straight-set wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. Middle Tennessee then cut the deficit 3-2 with back-to-back victories at the No. 5 and No. 3 slots. Phillips clinched the match for the Roadrunners with a three-set win (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) over Pooja Kommireddi at the No. 6 spot. Also in action was Dedering, who fell to Ann Kristin Siljestrom in three sets.
UTSA travels to Dallas on Sunday for a noon match at SMU.
