SAN ANTONIO - SMU handed UTSA its first home loss of the season with a 74-72 win on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
Senior guard Terrie Davis led all scorers with 17 points on the night. The Houston native also tied her career-high with five 3-pointers. Senior forward Amanda Foster recorded 14 points for the Roadrunners (8-5), while freshman guard Jordan Stark added 10. Freshman guard Whitney York dished out a career-best six assists.
Alice Severin posted a team-high 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor for the Mustangs (10-3), while Brittany Gilliam and Jillian Samuels added 12 apiece.
UTSA took an early 7-4 lead with 18:26 to play in the first half. SMU scored the next 10 points over a four-minute span to make the score 14-7. A 3-pointer by freshman guard Amber Gregg and a free throw by junior forward Onika Anderson cut the deficit to 21-18 with 8:27 to go. Gregg scored five straight points for the Roadrunners to pull them within one point (25-24) at the five-minute mark. Stark and Davis nailed back-to-back treys that gave UTSA a 30-27 lead with three minutes to play and Davis made her second 3-pointer of the half to give the Roadrunners a 35-33 advantage at the half.
UTSA began the second half on a 9-1 spurt to increase its lead to 43-34. However, SMU knotted the game at 43 courtesy of a 9-0 run with 15:47 left. Samuels’ 3-pointer from the left wing gave the Mustangs a 59-53 edge at the seven-minute mark. The Roadrunners trimmed the lead to two points (59-57) on an Anderson field goal, but SMU pulled away using a 9-2 run with 3:19 to go. With 1:15 remaining, the Roadrunners went on an 8-0 run to pull within one (68-67). Davis highlighted the run with two consecutive 3-pointers. A layup by Samuels put SMU up by three with just one minute remaining. Foster banked in a 3-pointer to tie the game at 70-all with 48 ticks to go. Meanwhile, Janielle Dodds connected on two freebies that gave the Mustangs a 72-70 lead, but Foster responded with a turnaround jumper to tie the score at 72 with five seconds left. After a SMU timeout, Katy Cobb nailed the winning basket with two seconds showing on the clock. Junior guard Monica Gibbs’ desperation shot fell short at the buzzer.
UTSA opens Southland Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 12, when it hosts Lamar at 7 p.m.
