High jumpers lead solid effort at Texas Tech Invitational

Freshman Aimee Jonas won the Texas Tech Invitational high jump title on Saturday.
LUBBOCK ? Freshman Aimee Jonas led a 1-2-3-4 finish in the high jump to highlight a solid effort for the UTSA women’s track & field team on Saturday at the Texas Tech Invitational.

Jonas, who attended nearby La Vernia High School, cleared 5-2 ? for top honors in the high jump, while junior Rikki Gray, sophomore Natalie Squier and freshman Jaclyn Bobmanuel all topped 5-0 ? to finish second, third and fourth, respectively, based on misses.

Sophomore Dana Mecke turned in her second strong meet in as many weeks. She clocked a 2:19.60 to take third in the 800 meters behind Shannon Jackson of Texas Tech (2:17.17) and Kisha Gaspard of UT Arlington (2:18.96), and placed fifth in the mile in 5:10.96, a five-second improvement from last week.

Senior Brittany Epps leaped to an 18-6 measure in a tight long jump competition, taking third with a measure just one-half inch behind the winner, Julianne Kennedy of Texas Tech.

The 1,600-meter relay team of sophomore Jessica Jones, freshman Kim Brooks, junior Ashley Jackson and Epps passed the baton to a 3:56.30 clocking for fourth place. Jackson clocked a 25.73 for sixth in the 200m, while Brooks and Jones finished seventh in the 400m (58.83) and 55m hurdles (8.32), respectively.

Freshman Adrienne Bocanegra was sixth in the shot put with a mark of 37-9 ?, while fellow freshman Baylee Holder took eighth in the 3,000m in 11:43.10.

The Roadrunners are off until the Houston Multis on Friday, Feb. 1.
