Sophomore Teddy Williams raced to a UTSA-record 6.66 in winning the 60 meters on Saturday. |
HOUSTON ? Sophomore Teddy Williams broke the Southland Conference's 60 meters record to highlight UTSA's season-opening effort at Saturday's Houston Indoor Opener.
Williams shattered his own school record when he stopped the clock in an NCAA provisional 6.66 in winning the 60-meter dash. His performance bettered Jared Connaughton's (UT Arlington) former mark of 6.68 set during the 2006 campaign. The Tyler native's time is the third-fastest in the NCAA this year and it broke the UTSA mark of 6.71 he set at last year's SLC Championships.
"We accomplished what we wanted to and that was to compete and stay
healthy," head coach Aaron Fox said following the meet. "We got an
outstanding performance from Teddy and we'll build on that and come
back here next Friday and try to improve."
Senior Luke Johnson was the Roadrunners' other winner of the day, as he
recorded a toss of 16.54m (54-3 ?) in the shot put. Johnson also
finished third in the weight throw with a 16.16m measurement (53-?).
Senior Will Vese, who had the fastest qualifying time of the day in the
60-meter hurdles (8.06), just missed first-place honors in the finals
by one one-hundredth of second when he crossed the tape in 7.97.
Meanwhile, sophomore Bryan Ugochukwu finished second in the 800 meters
when he clocked a 1:56.44.
UTSA, competing with a partial squad, finished fourth in the team standings with 90.5 points. Texas won the meet with 127.5 points, while Houston placed second with 122. Prairie View A&M was third with 96 points.
The Roadrunners are back in action on Friday, Jan. 18, when they return to Houston for the Leonard Hilton Memorial.
