SAN ANTONIO ? Senior guard Terrie Davis drained a school-record eight 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough as Lamar held off a late UTSA rally for a 75-74 victory on Saturday in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.

The Lady Cardinals improved to 8-6 with the one-point victory, while the Roadrunners dropped their second game in a row and fell to 8-6 on the season.

Davis was 8-of-15 from downtown and she tied junior Monica Gibbs with a game-high 24 points. Gibbs added a game-best 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the year and also dished out five assists.

Tamara Abalde led Lamar with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting and Brittney Williams added 22, as the Lady Cardinals shot an even 50 percent for the game (25-of-50). Williams grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Abalde collected eight.

After UTSA scored the first three points of the game, Lamar used a 19-7 run over the next 5:27 to take a nine-point lead. The Lady Cardinals led the rest of the half and took a 38-32 advantage into the locker room.

The Roadrunners tied the game at 47 when sophomore forward Courtney Laing was good on a layup at 11:12 mark in the second half. Lamar retook the lead on a 3-pointer by Williams the following possession and held the advantage for the next 8:34. Freshman Jordan Stark tied the game at 65 when she connected on a jumper at the 2:14 mark, but Abalde was good on a pair of free throws to give the Lady Cardinals a two-point lead. A layup by Gibbs knotted the contest at 67, but that was the closest UTSA would get the rest of the way, as Lamar drilled 8-of-9 free throws in the final two minutes.

The Roadrunners are back in action next week when it travels to Central Arkansas on Thursday, Jan. 17, for a 5:15 p.m. SLC contest (please note time change).
