SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA women’s track & field team begins the 2008 campaign on Saturday when they compete in the Houston Indoor Opener held at Bill Yeoman Field House.
Field events get underway at 8 a.m., followed by running events beginning at 12:30 p.m. UTSA will compete against teams from Jackson State, Lamar, Mississippi Valley State, Northwood, Prairie View A&M, St. Ambrose, Texas, Texas Lutheran, Texas Southern, Texas State, Tulane and UAB. James Blackwood enters his sixth season as head coach and welcomes back 13 letterwinners including seniors Brittany Epps, an all-conference performer in the relays; Hope Jimenez, an all-conference runner in cross country; Chelsea Malina and Kari Michalik. Juniors Ashley Jackson and Shanelle Slaughter also have earned All-SLC accolades in the relays, while sophomore Dana Mecke picked up all-league honors in cross country with a sixth-place finish this past fall.
Scheduled to compete Saturday are Barlow (3,000m), Epps (long jump), Mecke (mile), Michalik (400m, long jump, shot put), Slaughter (60m, long jump), junior Rikki Gray (high jump), sophomores Jessica Jones (60m hurdles), Farrah Moore (800m) and Natalie Squier (high jump) and freshmen Jaclyn Bobmanuel (high jump), Adrienne Bocanegra (shot put), Rebekah Hill (triple jump), Jayde James (800m), Aimee Jonas (60-meter hurdles, long jump, high jump) and Kayla Thomas (long jump).
