SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s track & field team, the two-time defending Southland Conference Indoor Champion, begins its 2008 season on Saturday when it travels to Houston for the Houston Opener. The Roadrunners will send 29 athletes that will compete in a total of 15 events to Bill Yeoman Field House.
Field events get underway at 8 a.m., followed by running events beginning at 12:30 p.m. UTSA will square off against teams from Houston, Lamar, Northwood, Prairie View A&M, St. Ambrose, Texas, Texas Southern and Texas State.
The Roadrunners welcome back 18 returning letterwinners in addition to 21 newcomers this season. Among the athletes returning are 2007 SLC Champions Will Vese (60-meter hurdles) and Gaston Griffin (400 meters) and school record holders Cedric Harris (200 meters/21.53/2006), Luke Johnson (weight throw/16.40/2006), Alton St. Rose (triple jump/14.57/2007) and Teddy Williams (60 meters/6.71/2007).
UTSA is coming off a 2007 indoor campaign that saw them winthe program's second consecutive conference championship. Aaron Fox,the 2006 and '07 SLC Indoor Men's Coach of the Year, begins his sixth season ashead coach and is in his ninth year overall at UTSA.
