SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman guard Jordan Stark and junior forward Onika Anderson had career highs
of 25 and 23 points, respectively, to lead UTSA to a thrilling 90-89 double-overtime victory against Miami
(Ohio) in the second game of the Wells
Fargo UTSA New Year’s Classic on Saturday at the ConvocationCenter.
Anderson
also posted her first career double-double with a career-high 14 rebounds,
while Stark finished with a career-best five 3-pointers. Junior guard Monica Gibbs
collected her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds,
while freshman guard Whitney York scored 15 points for the Roadrunners (7-4), who snapped a four-game losing streak. The 90 points marked the first time since the 2000-01 season that UTSA
reached that total.
Amanda Jackson led all scorers with a career-high 43 points,
while Jenna Schone chipped in with 20 and Stephanie Ford hauled in a
team-best nine rebounds for the Redhawks (7-5).
Miami (Ohio) grabbed the early six-point lead on a
pair of free throws by Courtney Reed with 9:39 to go in the first half. A quick
6-0 run by UTSA knotted game 21-21 when York
connected on a floater down the middle of the floor at the six-minute mark. Freshman
Amber Gregg’s 3-pointer from the left corner capped off an 8-0 spurt to give
the Roadrunners a 32-24 edge with 2:29 remaining. The Roadrunners took a 34-29
lead at the half when Anderson
connected on a layup with under a minute to play.
In a second half that featured eight ties, Jackson scored the first
five points to tie the game 34-34 with 18:54 left. UTSA pushed its lead to as
many as four points when Anderson nailed a short
jumper, but Miami (Ohio) scored seven consecutive points to
regain the 43-40 lead with 14:15 left. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Stark and
Gregg put the Roadrunners atop 51-49. Then, Stark’s two straight 3-pointers at
the four-minute mark increased UTSA’s lead 62-56. Jackson’s freebies tied the game at 63-63 with
3:22 left. Anderson’s
free throw gave the Roadrunners a two-point (72-70) with 55 seconds. The
Redhawks had a chance to tie the contest but Schone’s basket was waved off as Anderson drew a charge
giving the ball back to UTSA. However, Stark missed two key free throws with 38
seconds remaining. With six ticks to go Schone’s layup sent the game to
overtime.
The first overtime had four ties and four lead changes. Anderson scored the first
bucket, then Schone made good on two free throws to tie the game 74-74. Gibbs’
freebies gave the Roadrunners the lead back, but Jackson scored the next five points to put
the Redhawks up 79-76. Anderson
completed a three-point play with 45 ticks left to tie the game 79-79. York’s free throw gave UTSA
the 80-79 lead, but Schone sent the contest to a second overtime with her free
throw
Stark’s layup put the Roadrunners up 82-80 with 4:30 to go
in the second overtime. Jackson, who scored all nine points, connected on a
short jumper to make the score 82-82 with 2:00 minutes left. UTSA retook the
lead on Anderson’s free throws, but Jackson came right back
with a basket to knot the game 84-84. With a 1:09 remaining, Jackson made 3-of-4 from the line to give the
Redhawks a three-point cushion (89-86). York’s
free throw pulled UTSA within two-points of Miami
(Ohio) lead with
47 seconds. Stark nailed her fifth 3-pointer of the night to give the
Roadrunners the 90-89 edge. After a timeout called by the Redhawks, Schone’s attempt
came up short and Jackson’s tip-in as time expired rimmed out and UTSA held on
for the thrilling win.
The Roadrunners close out the tournament against WeberState at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
