UTSA falls to Virginia Tech in opening round of Tulane Doubletree Classic

NEW ORLEANS, La. ? Freshman Whitney York’s 21 points was not enough as VirginiaTech collected the 84-59 win against UTSA in game two of the 2007 TulaneDoubletree Classic at Fogelman Arena.

Virginia Tech’s Andrea Barbour led all scorers with 25points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, while Brittany Cook added 15 pointsand Amber Hall hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds. The Hokies (9-3) dominatedthe Roadrunners (6-3) on the glass by 27 rebounds (56-29).

Meanwhile, Onika Anderson chipped in with a career-high 11 pointsand a team-best six boards. Freshman Jordan Stark posted a career-highfour steals on the night as the Roadrunners collected 14 steals.

VT jumped to a 7-0 lead over UTSA and would never trail therest of the game. Back-to-back baskets by Yorkcut the deficit to 9-4 with 16:15 to go in the first half. The Roadrunnerswould pull within four (18-14) of Virginia Tech when Anderson connected on a layup with 10:10remaining. Then Hokies extended their lead 30-20 with under three minutes to go, buta pair of free throws by Yorkmade the score 34-25 at the half.

In second half action, the Hokies useda 9-4 run to pushed their lead to 45-29 with 16:22 left. A layup by Anderson pulled UTSAwithin 55-44 at the 11-minute mark. Virginia Tech pulled away from theRoadrunners using a 23-9 over the next eight minutes of the game to make the score 80-53. FreshmanAmber Gregg ended UTSA’s scoreless drought with a made free throw with 1:57remaining.

The Roadrunners will face Tulane on Friday at 5 p.m., in theconsolation game of the 2007 Tulane Doubletree Classic.
