Mecke earns Southland Conference All-Academic accolades

Dana Mecke

FRISCO ? Freshman defensive specialist Dana Mecke was named to the Southland Conference's six-member all-academic second team, the league office announced on Friday. Mecke, who is majoring in engineering, was one of just two honorees with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average on the two squads.

The Bulverde native saw action in 31 matches along the back row for the Roadrunners this past fall and averaged 2.05 digs per game. Playing for the first time since she was a prep senior in 2005, Mecke reached double figures in digs in eight matches, including a career-high 16 at Sam Houston State (Sept. 29) and again at Central Arkansas (Oct. 21).

In addition to her duties on the court, she also ran for UTSA's cross country squad for the second season in a row. Mecke ran meets and played matches on the same weekend five times this past fall. She won her first career meet at the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic on Sept. 21 and earned all-league honors on Oct. 27 with her sixth-place effort at the Southland Conference Championships in Corpus Christi. Mecke finished in 65th place at the NCAA South Central Regional, which was the best performance by a Roadrunners female since 2005.
