SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA head baseball coach Sherman Corbett announced Wednesday the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Joining the Roadrunners for the 2009 season will be Marc Gomez (Corpus Christi, Texas/Moody HS), Clay Schrader (Humble, Texas/Atascocita HS) and Casey Selsor (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS).
“I am extremely excited about the young men we signed,” Corbett said. “What we lack in quantity we make up for in quality. Early in the summer, Coach (Jason) Marshall and Coach (Mike) Clement identified those athletes we would like to fill our needs for the upcoming years and all three of these young men were at the top of our list.
“Marc Gomez has had an outstanding high school career at one of the best high school baseball programs in the state at Corpus Christi Moody and he’ll be a welcomed addition to our pitching staff. Clay Schrader and Casey Selsor are both very athletic and will have the opportunity to compete for playing time both as pitchers and positional players. I expect all three to have an immediate impact on the 2009 team.”
Gomez is a two-year starter for Corky Gallegos at Corpus Christi’s Moody High School. He has posted a 17-2 career record and is coming off a junior season to remember. The 5-foot-11 left-handed pitcher was a 2007 Louisville Slugger All-America selection and the Texas Sports Writers Association 4A Player of the Year. Gomez posted a 13-1 record with a 0.70 ERA, six shutouts and 127 strikeouts in leading the Trojans to a 39-3 mark, the Texas 4A State Championship ? the program’s second in school history ? and a No. 3 ranking in the Easton Sports National High School Poll. His top performances from a year ago included a victory against Cy-Fair, the Texas 5A State Champions, and an 11-strikeout effort in the state semifinals against Canyon Randall at Dell Diamond. Also a success in the classroom, Gomez ranks in the top quarter of his graduating class.
Schrader is a starter for head coach Eric Matthews at Humble’s Atascocita High School. In the program’s first year in 2007, the 6-foot right-handed pitcher/outfielder led the Eagles to a second-place finish in District 21-5A and a trip to the state playoffs. Schrader, who earned all-district honors as an outfielder, hit .392 and led the squad in extra-base hits and RBIs in addition to posting a 3.60 ERA on the mound. He is the school’s first student-athlete to sign a college scholarship.
Selsor is a three-year letterwinner for Chans Chapman at San Antonio’s Reagan High School. The 6-foot-3 left-handed pitcher/outfielder earned all-district honors a year ago after hitting .318 at the plate and posting a 6-2 mark on the mound, while leading the Rattlers to a 32-5 record and a spot in the Texas 5A Regional Quarterfinals. Selsor also played in the prestigious Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif., for the Washington Nationals squad. An honor roll student and academic all-district performer, he also is a member of National Honor Society, PALS, Winners Circle Club and Who's Who Among American High School Students.
