Senior guard Terrie Davis returns for her final season with at UTSA and is making the most of it, just four 3-pointers shy of breaking UTSA’s all-time 3-point record. The Houston native scored seven points in the regular season opener against Huston-Tillotson on Nov. 9 and then followed her performance with a game-high 20 points against Belmont on Nov. 11. She chipped in with 14 points Sunday night in the win against Wichita State. Davis took time out her schedule to sit with goUTSA.com and talk about this season’s outlook, her final year as a Roadrunners and the chances of winning a conference championship.
How has the experience been playing for UTSA for four years?
“It’s been great. I love UTSA and I wish I had more years to play. I love the coaches and all the teammates I’ve had in the previous years, but I’m going to miss the basketball games the most.”
Being a veteran of the team, does that put any extra pressure on you?
“Not really because I’ve always been a leader on my team, just more of a silent leader; I lead by example and my teammates look to me to be a leader, and I’m used to it so there’s really no pressure.”
What do you think are the chances for winning conference this year?
“I think they’re high. I don’t want to guarantee it, but we’re looking good right now. All the hard work would be worth it to see the banner hanging and to know that I was a part of that team.”
You are four 3-pointers away from breaking the schools all-time 3-point record. How does that make you feel?
“Honestly I don’t really care for it, I just try to win a basketball game. It’s cool, but I just want to win. That’s my main focus right now is to win the championship and get a ring this year.”
Is there a team in particular you’re looking forward to playing this year?
“All of them. This is my last year, so I’m going to go all out; I don’t want to miss a game.”
How has the team adjusted to the newcomers?
“We’ve adjusted pretty well, I think what helps us is that we get along well off the court. Honestly, this is my favorite team I’ve been on at UTSA because we get along so well, and I think that helps us on the court. We have fun but we can be serious at the same time.”
What did you do to prepare for this season?
“Conditioning, lifting weights, shooting, scrimmaging, and playing pick up games. After each season I try to pick up my workout more and more each year so that I can get better.”
How did you get into basketball?
“My first love was baseball, then I started getting into basketball around age 9. I would play with all my guy friends at the park, and then I started liking basketball and wanted to play it forever so I dropped baseball.”
How does calling your mom before each game help?
“I like to hear her voice before every basketball game. I like to hear her say she’s proud of me and that she loves me. That helps me get ready for the game by calming all my nerves down. Ever since I’ve been in college, I call my mom every day since I don’t get to see her that often anymore.
What are your plans after college?
“I don’t know yet. I’m trying to graduate, but don’t know what I’m going to do with my kinesiology major yet. Hopefully I can continue playing basketball after this year either overseas, then maybe the WNBA.”
Do you think that your kinesiology studies help when you get injured?
“Yes, it helps me take care of my body and lets me know about my own injuries.”
What do you like to do in your free time?
“Hanging out with my friends, chill, I like to watch sports and listen to music.”
