SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman Whitney York's career-high of 22 points paced the UTSA women's basketball team to a 68-60 victory over Wichita State on Sunday night at the Convocation Center.
Yorkcontinued the hot start to her career scoring in double figures for the third consecutive game. The Bryannative was 8-of-11 from the floor and recorded a career-best five steals.Junior Monica Gibbs hauled a game-high 11 rebounds and dished out eightassists. Senior Terrie Davis added 14 points and connected on two 3-pointers onthe night, putting her four shy of breaking UTSA’s all-time record of 121held by Philicia Ross.
UTSA (3-0) is off to its best startsince the 1996-97 season and it is also head coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair’s best startat UTSA.
Kiki Stephens led WichitaState (1-1) with team highsof 16 points and eight rebounds. Darcia Frazier chipped in with 10 points forthe Shockers.
The Roadrunners built a 9-2 lead with 15:51 to go in the first half by hitting their first two shots from the field and 4-of-5 free throws. WichitaState then scored the next six points topull within one at the 12-minute mark. FreshmanJordan Stark and Davis connected on back-to-back 3-pointers and a free throw byYork pushed thelead to 11 points at intermission (35-24).
UTSA built its largest lead of the game, 44-31,on York’sjumper with 15:58 to go in the contest. The Shockers cut the deficit to one point (56-55)with 6:52 remaining and then took their first and only lead when Fraziernailed a short jumper with four minutes left. However, Davis’ second trey of the night extended theRoadrunners' lead to four (62-58) with less than two minutes to play. UTSA closed out the game by hitting 4-of-6 from the charity stripeto seal the eight-point victory.
The Roadrunners return to action next week when they host the annual UTSA Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Convocation Center.
