SAN ANTONIO ? Senior guard Terrie Davis' 20-point effort helped the UTSA women's basketball team past Belmont, 77-65, on Sunday at the Convocation Center.
Davis
was 8-of-16 from the floor, including three 3-pointers in the game. Freshman
Whitney York chipped in with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while junior Monica
Gibbs tallied 12 points, seven boards and four assists. Senior Amanda Foster hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Roadrunners improved to 2-0 on the season for the second
time during head coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair’s tenure, while the Bruins evened their
mark at 1-1 on the year.
Shaunda Strayhorn's layup gave Belmont an 8-6 lead with
16:03 remaining in the first half, but UTSA mounted an 18-6 run over the next
five minutes to build a 24-14 advantage. Freshman Amber Gregg and York each had five
points during the run. The Roadrunners then extended their lead to as
many as 21 points using a 19-8 run to close out the half and led 46-25 at the
break.

behind the arc, while York
connected on 4-of-6 shots, as the Roadrunners shot a sizzling 52 percent in the first
half.
UTSA jumped out to a 24-point lead (53-29) following a pair
of Foster free throws with 15:35 remaining in the game. However, the Bruins
pulled within six courtesy of a 27-9 run over the next six
minutes, but the Roadrunners pushed their lead back to double digits
(67-57) on a jumper by sophomore Courtney Laing with seven minutes remaining
and held on for the 12-point victory.
