UTSA ends exhibition season with impressive victory on Sunday

SAN ANTONIO ? Sophomore Courtney Laing led five players in double figures with a game-high 29 points and UTSA cruised past the Dallas Diesel, 93-58, on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners jumped to a 24-12 lead when freshman Whitney York connected a 3-pointer at the 10-minute mark of the first half. The Diesel pulled within five (27-22) on Ebony Jackson's three-ball with 8:18 remaining the first half. However, Laing and freshman Jordan Stark combined for 11 points during a 21-5 run to close out the half and the Roadrunners took a 48-27 advantage into the locker room.

The Diesel started the second half with a 13-5 spurt to pull within 15 points with 14:43 remaining in the game, but UTSA outscored Dallas 38-18 over the final 13 minutes to secure the 35-point win.

Junior Monica Gibbs recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-best 15 rebounds in addition to collecting five steals. Meanwhile, freshmen Amber Gregg, Stark and York scored 14 points apiece.

Defensively, UTSA forced 23 turnovers, collected 16 steals and held the Diesel to less than 30 percent shooting from the floor.

UTSA plays its 2007-08 regular season home opener on Friday against Huston-Tillotson. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
