AUSTIN ? Junior Robin Fernandes ended his fall season on a strong note with the Texas Invitational singles consolation title over the weekend.
Fernandes began the day with a straight-set win over Geoff Embry of Oregon. In his next two matches, he cruised past Dmitry Minkin and Mike Pavlov from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in straight sets to advance to the finals. The Edenvale, South Africa, native then posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Marco Verdasco from Oregon to collect his first individual title of the fall.
In other singles action, sophomore Rodrigo Morgado advanced to the round of 16 with a three-set win against Pavlov before falling to Arizona’s Peter Zimmer. Morgado dropped the first set, 7-6, but won the second stanza, 6-3, to force a third set. Zimmer downed Morgado, 6-4, to move on.
Meanwhile, freshman Daniel Moreiras collected a three-set win versus Shaun Busset from Ball State (6-7, 6-3, 6-2). He then fell to Maxime Moreau from Laredo CC in straight sets. Also in action was sophomore Nenad Maric, who lost his first round match to Brett Binkleuy from Marquette (3-6, 6-2, 6-3).
UTSA opens its 2008 spring season at Texas on Feb. 3.
