SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s tennis team ends its fall season this weekend at the Texas Invitational held at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin.
Joining Texas and UTSA at the event will be Arizona, Arizona State, Ball State, Baylor, Boise State, Denver, Florida Atlantic, Laredo Community College, Marquette, Nebraska, Oregon, St. Edward’s, Texas-Arlington, Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Roadrunners return to the court after a one-week layoff after playing at the ITA Regionals in Austin.
In singles action of the main draw, junior Robin Fernandes collected a win over Adolfo Solares with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the round of 64, but he then fell to Bojan Szumanski in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) in the round of 32. Meanwhile, senior Adam Becker advanced to the round of the 64 of the main draw after dealing James Langford a three-set loss (7-5, 4-6, 6-3). However, Becker then dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Luis Diaz Barriga.
In the consolation bracket, sophomore Rodrigo Morgado picked up a straight-set win against Texas Tech’s Jeremy Reed, while freshman Daniel Moreiras also won his match in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) versus Shanshank Vij of Texas-Pan American. In the fourth round, both Morgado and Moreiras lost their matches.
In doubles action, Fernandes and Moreiras paired up for an 8-5 win against Piotr Banas and Arlen Domoney, but they lost in the round of 16 by a score of 8-1 to Chris Chirico and Conor Pollock. Also in doubles action were Becker and Morgado, who lost to Chong Wang and Fillip Zivojonovic.
