UTSA finishes successful weekend with first SLC victory of year

CORPUS CHRISTI ? Junior middle hitter Victoria Prior led three UTSA players in double figures with 16 kills and the Roadrunners ended a successful weekend with their second sweep in as many nights on Saturday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (30-26, 30-26, 30-24).

UTSA improved to 9-13 with its sixth sweep of the year and also picked up its first Southland Conference victory of the season, while the Islanders fell to 4-13 (1-4 SLC).

The Roadrunners, who jumped out to sizable leads in all three games, hit .315 for the match. Freshman outside hitter Kendra Rowland and senior outside hitter Cristina Almeida chipped in with 10 kills apiece, while Prior finished the weekend with a .646 hitting percentage and 35 winners (just four errors in 48 swings).

UTSA was strong on defense, tying its season high with 12 total blocks. Freshman middle hitter Briana Mason led the way with a career-bet seven (1 solo/6 assists), while Prior (1/4) and junior outside hitter Gena Rhodes added five (0/5) each. Junior libero Audrey Hiser racked up 19 digs, giving her at least 10 in the past 11 matches.

Middle blocker Jordan Wagner led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with 13 kills, setter Molly McCabe dished out 32 assists and libero Laura North collected 20 digs.

The Roadrunners return to action on Thursday night when they host I-35 rival Texas State at the Convocation Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
