CONWAY, Ark. ? Middle blocker Chloe Smith had a match-high 20 kills and led Central Arkansas to a 30-24, 30-19, 32-30 sweep of UTSA on Sunday at the Prince Center. The Roadrunners dropped their fourth match in a row to fall to 9-17 overall and 1-8 in Southland Conference play, while the Sugar Bears won their fifth consecutive contest to improve to 21-6 (7-3).
Central Arkansas used an early 12-2 in game one to take a 16-8 lead, but a 6-1 UTSA rally pulled it within four at 19-15. The Roadrunners got as close as three (23-20), but the Sugar Bears responded by scoring seven of the final 11 points to clinch the six-point victory. UCA then cruised to an 11-point second frame triumph on the strength of a .439 hitting percentage. UTSA didn't go down without a fight in third third and final frame, as it rallied from a 27-20 deficit and staved off a trio of match points. However, the Sugar Bears proved to be too much in the end and they completed the three-game victory.
Freshman outside hitter Kendra Rowland and junior middle hitter Victoria Prior paced the Roadrunners offense with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. On defense, junior setter Rebecca Hrapmann had a career-high 17 digs and freshman defensive specialist Dana Mecke tied her personal best with 16.
UTSA begins a five-match home stand on Wednesday night when it welcomes Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to the Convocation Center. FIrst serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
