Freshman collects first career shutout in first start as a Roadrunn |
SAN ANTONIO ? Sophomore Allison McCabe's first career shutout helped the UTSA soccer team play to a scoreless tie against Stephen F. Austin on Friday night in Southland Conference action at the UTSA Recreational Sports Complex.
McCabe, who was making her first collegiate start, made the most it with her first career shutout, collecting four saves on the night.
“Going into this match I felt confident but nervous also.” McCabe said. “Once the match started and I made my first save, things started to slow down for me and my confidence picked up. Also, my defense played great.”
The Roadrunners (3-7-2, 1-1-1 SLC) had a couple of good looks in the first half. The first came when freshman Alli Dillon's shot was punched out by Crystin Pactor early in the match. Sophomore Kim Gonzales’ attempt at the 40-minute mark sailed wide right as both teams entered intermission tied 0-0.
SFA (5-3-2, 1-0-1 SLC) took its hacks in the second half, but McCabe made two outstanding saves for the Roadrunners. The Ladyjacks had a golden opportunity in the 59th minute when Lauren Fricks was able to get past the UTSA defense and take her aim at the net, but her shot hit the crossbar.
In the first overtime, neither team was able to assemble any offense which sent the match to a second overtime.
Three minutes into the second overtime period, sophomore Kim Selman’s free kick was stopped by Pactor. The Ladyjacks then threatened, as Kelli Wilson’s shot hit the post with less than four minutes remaining in the match.
Pactor collected a match-high seven saves for SFA, while sophomore Veronica Najera posted a match-best four shots to lead the Roadrunners.
UTSA returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Sam Houston State at the UTSA Recreational Sports Complex.
