SAN ANTONIO - UTSA women’s basketball coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair and her squad begin preparations for the 2007-08 season with its first official practice on Friday at the UTSA Recreational and Wellness Center. The team hits the court at 7 p.m.
“We’re really excited getting the season started.” Rippetoe-Blair said. “They are ready to practice, instead of running up and down the court. Tomorrow’s practice will set the tone for the rest of the season on how prepared they are.”
The Roadrunners, who finished 14-16 overall and 9-7 in the Southland Conference last season, return seven letterwinners and welcome seven newcomers this year.
Among the returnees are senior guard Terrie Davis and junior guard Monica Gibbs.
Davis, who started all 30 games a year ago, returns for her final season after posting career highs with 10.6 points per game and 54 3-pointers. The Houston native currently sits second on UTSA’s all-time list with 113 3-pointers. She ranked second on the squad with 68 assists and 48 steals a year ago.
Gibbs, who earned second-team All-SLC honors last year, led the team with 139 assists and 8.1 rebounds per contest in 2006-07. She also led the league with 13 double-doubles last season, while her 12.9 points per game ranked second-best on the team.
UTSA opens its season with an exhibition game against the Houston Jaguars at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
