SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA softball team announced Tuesday its 2008 schedule, which includes 19 home games highlighted by matchups against Big 12 powers Baylor and Missouri.
“Once again we’ve put together a challenging schedule,” third-year head coach Lori Cook said. “The non-conference portion includes some of the best teams in the nation, and that will better prepare us for a tough Southland Conference slate. We are looking forward to the season and are very anxious to get out on the field and play.”
The Roadrunners, 27-31 a year ago, open on the road with a three-game series at perennial power Texas on Feb. 9-10, before heading to Las Cruces, N.M., for the Hotel Encanto Invitational hosted by New Mexico State on Feb. 15-17. There UTSA will face Colorado State, Illinois-Chicago, North Dakota State, UT Arlington and the host Aggies. The Roadrunners return to the El Paso area the following weekend to face UTEP in a three-game set on Feb. 23-24.
UTSA had its streak of three consecutive Southland Conference regular season championships snapped by finishing fourth with an 18-12 mark last year. The Roadrunners host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first of 10 three-game league series on Feb. 27-28 at Roadrunner Field. UTSA stays home to face McNeese State on March 1-2 before stepping out of conference play for a home date with 2007 Women’s College World Series participant Baylor on March 4. Other home non-conference games include Missouri on March 25-26 and New Mexico on March 27. The Roadrunners also have road twinbills at North Texas (March 19), Houston (April 9) and Texas Tech (April 15).
The Roadrunners travel to the Metroplex to play defending regular season conference champion UT Arlington on March 8-9, and return to San Antonio for a league series with Southeastern Louisiana on March 15-16. Other home SLC sets include Texas State (April 4-5) and Stephen F. Austin (April 26-27), while UTSA travels to Central Arkansas (March 21-22), Nicholls (March 29-30), Northwestern State (April 19-20) and Sam Houston State (May 3-4). The SLC Tournament is set for May 8-11 in San Marcos.
