Roadrunners tie Baylor, 2-2, in home opener

SAN ANTONIO ? Due to rain heavy and lightning, the match between UTSA and Baylor was called with the score tied 2-2 with 89:40 remaining in the match on Tuesday night at the UTSA Recreational Sports Complex.

Baylor (2-0-1) jumped to the early 1-0 lead when sophomore Lauren Weathers connected on the first goal of the match with 15:01 to go in the first half. UTSA knotted the game at one when sophomore Veronica Najera received a pass from sophomore Chelsea Zimmerman down the middle of the field and put it past the goalkeeper at the 26-minute mark of the frame.

In second half action, freshman Alli Dillon netted her first collegiate goal off a corner kick from the left side to give the Roadrunners (0-1-1) a 2-1 advantage with 71:07 remaining in the match. However, Baylor’s Megan Sherrell tied the match with her winner at the 84-minute mark. The match then was suspended due to lighting and rain with 20 seconds left in the match and called off resulting in a 2-2 draw for both teams.

Sophomores Ezinne Okpo and Kari Weiland led UTSA with three shots apiece, while Zimmerman tallied a match-high two assists on the night. Junior goalie Rachel Francis posted a match-best eight saves and allowed one goal.

UTSA hits the road for a pair of non-conference matches next weekend at Texas Southern on Friday, Sept. 7, in Houston and at Texas Tech on Sunday, Sept. 9, in Lubbock.
