Roadrunners to head West this weeekend

SAN ANTONIO ? Fresh off a sweep of the team titles at the RicardoRomo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic last Friday, the UTSA men’s andwomen’s cross country teams hit the road for the 34th annual StanfordInvitational held Saturday, Sept. 29, in Stanford, Calif.

The men’s 8,000-meter race is slated to begin at 6:15 p.m. Centraltime, followed by the women’s 6k at 6:48 p.m. The Roadrunners will facea stiff test in both races as several nationally-ranked squads ?including the host teams Stanford ? are entered.

The UTSA men ran away with their first Romo Classic crown since 2004behind a strong team effort. Freshman Brandon Chiuminetta led sixRoadrunners in the top 10 finishers with a fourth-place finish as UTSAscored 25 points to easily outdistance runner-up Texas State (55) inthe five-team field. At last year’s Stanford Invitational, UTSA placed13th behind a 65th-place showing from Benson Cheserek.

The women won their second consecutive Romo Classic team title behindsophomore Dana Mecke’s first-ever collegiate victory. Sophomore FaithBarlow was close behind in third as five Roadrunners finished in thetop 10 to help UTSA score 26 points for an easy win ahead of TexasState (68). Last year, UTSA finished fourth in the 4k on the strengthof top-20 efforts from Barlow (19) and Hope Jimenez (16).
