SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to Iona on Sunday afternoon at the UTSA Recreational Sports Complex.
UTSA (1-6-1) scored the first goal of the match when sophomore Veronica Najera connected on her second goal of the season. Sophomore Chelsea Zimmerman had the assist on the goal, which brought her season total to four. Iona tied the match when Carol Danis netted her first goal of the season two minutes later. The Gaels then took the lead on Megan Turnbull’s goal with 2:32 minutes left in the frame.
Iona (2-7) upped its lead to 5-1 with three goals in the second half. Danis scored two of the three winners of the frame.
Sophomore Ezinne Okpo led UTSA with a team-high four shots, while Najera, Zimmerman and freshman Alli Dillon each had three. Freshman Allison McCabe made her collegiate debut in second half.
UTSA travels to Houston for a non-conference match at Houston on Friday, Sept. 28. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
