Dana Mecke won her first collegiate race on Friday evening.SAN ANTONIO ?
Sophomore Dana Mecke cruised to victory in the women’s 5,000-meter race to lead UTSA to a dominating team victory on Friday evening at the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic held at Brooks City-Base.
Mecke, a Smithson Valley High School product, covered the 5k loop on a hot afternoon in a time of 18:00, as UTSA scored 26 points to easily outdistance I-35 rival Texas State’s 68 in the five-team field. Texas A&M-Kingsville was third with 71, followed by St. Mary’s (80) and St. Edward’s (118). It marked the second straight team championship for the Roadrunners at the meet.
For Mecke, who played in a volleyball match at Texas State on Thursday night and will suit up again on Saturday afternoon at Texas-Arlington, her win was the first of her collegiate career and her second-straight top-10 finish while juggling two sports this fall. Sophomore Faith Barlow was close behind in 18:40, good for third overall behind former UTSA standout Leticia Cerna and second among collegians.
Freshman Alona Howard placed seventh in 19:54, while sophomore Katy Spence and freshman Jayde James finished ninth (19:59) and 10th (20:07), respectively. Freshman Baylee Holder was just out of the top 10 in 11th (20:10).
The Roadrunners return to the course next Saturday, Sept. 29, when they travel west for the Stanford Invitational.
