SAN ANTONIO ? Freshman Brandon Chiuminetta led six Roadrunners in the top 10, as the UTSA men's cross country team cruised to the the team title on Friday evening at the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic held at Brooks City-Base.
Chiuminetta toured the 5,000-meter course in a time of 15:40 for fourth place in the 54-person field, narrowly nipping fellow freshman Josh Bart, who also clocked 15:40, at the finish line. Sophomore Corey Vargas placed sixth in 15:44, while freshman Dominick Zucconi and senior Larry Brooks finished seventh (15:44) and eighth (15:45), respectively. Senior Eric Miller was 10th in 15:47 as the six-pack of Roadrunners was separated by a mere seven seconds.
The Roadrunners scored 25 points for an easy win over Texas State (55) in the team standings. St. Edward’s was third with 77 points, followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (89) and Unattached-Palo Alto (98). It marked the first team title at this meet for UTSA since 2004.
The Roadrunners return to the course next Saturday, Sept. 29, when they travel west for the Stanford Invitational.
