SAN MARCOS ? The UTSA women’s cross country team
placed fifth at the Texas State
Invitational held Saturday morning at Gary Job Corps.
Sophomore Dana Mecke and Faith Barlow posted top-15
finishes to help UTSA to a fifth-place showing with 124 points in the
11-team field. Texas successfully defended its title with 27 points,
followed by Texas State (82), Trinity (83) and Texas-Pan American (85).
Mecke, who is pulling double-duty this fall as a
first-year member of the UTSA volleyball team, toured the three-mile
trek in 18:49.81 after playing in a pair of volleyball matches the past
two nights. Fellow sophomore Faith Barlow was 14th in 19:20.38, while
freshman Alona Howard and sophomore Katy Spence placed 29th (20:26.83)
and 38th (20:52.44), respectively. Freshman Jayde James was 40th
(21:01.77) to round out the five scorers. Betzy Jimenez of Texas was
the women’s individual champion in 17:49.15.
UTSA has next weekend off before hosting the Ricardo
Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 21-22, at
Brooks City-Base.
