SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s basketball program unveiledThursday its 2007-08 schedule, featuring a 16-game home slate thatincludes a date with SMU and non-conference road matchups withperennial powers Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma State.
“We’re excited about this year’s schedule,” second-year head coachBrooks Thompson said. “We play some very good programs innon-conference, so we’ll have to be on top of our game to besuccessful. The Southland Conference will be tough again, so it’s achallenging schedule from beginning to end but we like challenges.”
The Roadrunners, who return four starters from last year’s squad, begintheir campaign with a home exhibition game against Mary-Hardin Bayloron Nov. 3. UTSA will open the regular season at home againstHardin-Simmons on Nov. 9 in the second half of a doubleheader thatincludes a women’s game against Huston-Tillotson.
UTSA makes the short trip to Austin on Nov. 12 to face Texas beforereturning to San Antonio to play Navy on Nov. 17 at the Alamodome.Following a nine-day layoff, the Roadrunners enjoy a three-gamehomestand at the Convocation Center against Paul Quinn (Nov. 26),Missouri-Kansas City (Nov. 29) and SMU (Dec. 1).
UTSA leaves the state for the first time in mid-December for games atArkansas (Dec. 12), Georgia State (Dec. 15) and San Diego (Dec. 22),and has home dates against Texas Wesleyan (Dec. 19) and McMurry (Dec.28). The first two weeks of January present the Roadrunners with theirfinal two non-conference contests at Oklahoma State (Jan. 2) andTexas-Pan American (Jan. 8).
“In Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Texas, we’ll play three of the bestprograms in the nation,” Thompson said. “Getting to play SMU at homeand Navy at the Alamodome is exciting for our program and our fans. Thestrength of our non-conference schedule will absolutely help us beprepared for Southland play.”
The Roadrunners open a 16-game Southland Conference slate on the roadat Lamar on Jan. 12 before hosting three of the next four at homeagainst Central Arkansas (Jan. 17), Northwestern State (Jan. 19) andrival Texas State (Jan. 26). Five of the eight February games will beplayed on the road, while two of the final three regular seasoncontests are at home, including the Homecoming Game against defendingconference champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 1. TheSouthland Conference Tournament will be held on March 13-16 at theMerrell Center in Katy, Texas.
