SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA women’s cross country team opens theseason on Friday at the Islander Relay Race held at WestGuth Park in Corpus Christi.
The women’s race will start at 6 p.m. with two-person relay teamsrunning alternating legs that equal 6,000 meters each. The Roadrunners will compete againstteams from Texas-Pan American, Texas State, Texas-Arlington and the hostIslanders. West Guth Park will be the site of this year’s SouthlandConference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27.
The women are under the direction of first-year coach Katie(Poindexter) Kelley, a former standout for the Roadrunners from2000-03. She welcomes back three letterwinners in sophomores FaithBarlow, Dana Mecke and Katy Spence. Barlow consistently finished inUTSA’s top three as a freshman in 2006, highlighted by a 19th-placeshowing at the Stanford Invitational. Mecke, who will split time thisfall as a member of the volleyball squad, also excelled as a first-yearrunner with two top-five finishes. Spence turned in three top-20finishes, including a 10th-place effort at the Ricardo Romo/UTSAClassic.
