UTSA loses season opener at Boise State on Friday

BOISE, Idaho ? Boise State hit .276 while holding UTSA to a .074 percentage and the Roadrunners were swept in their 2007 season opener at the Bronco Invitational on Friday night (30-19, 30-12, 30-26).

The two teams were neck and neck for the first half of game one, but the Broncos reeled off 15 of the final 20 points after UTSA pulled within one at 15-14 for the victory.

Boise State used 11 consecutive winners to extend a 13-8 advantage to 16 points and went on to take a commanding 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Although the Broncos never let UTSA get a lead in the final stanza, the game was much more competitive. After the Roadrunners fell behind 21-15, they fought back to within one at 24-23, but Boise State reeled off four consecutive points and held on for the win.

Freshman outside hitter Kendra Rowland led the Roadrunners offense with a match-high 14 kills (.275 pct.) in her first collegiate match. Junior setter Rebecca Hrapmann had 31 assists and a career-best 16 digs, while senior outside hitter Cristina Almeida added 12 digs and seven winners.

Outside hitter Jamie Claussen led Boise State with 12 kills, while setter Mandy Klein recorded 41 assists and three service aces. Libero Lauren Hamm added a team-high 17 digs and outside hitter Arlee Tamietti registered five block assists.

The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday when they wrap up tournament play with a pair of matches. UTSA will face No. 24 Santa Clara (1-0) at 11:30 a.m. (CT), followed by a 6 p.m. tilt against Cal State Fullerton (0-1).
