Dupree fifth after day one of NCAA heptathlon

? Day 2 results

SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? UTSA senior All-American Ryanne Dupree is in fifth place after day one of the NCAA Outdoor Championships women’s heptathlon held Thursday at Hornet Stadium.

Dupree tallied 3,537 points through the first four events of the two-day competition and is in the thick of a tight race for All-America honors among 27 athletes. The East Central high product trails defending national champion Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State (3,557) by just 20 points and is within striking distance of day-one leader Gaelle Niare of SMU, who scored 3,690 points.

"Ryanne had a very solid first day and has put herself in contention for a very good performance in this event," head coach James Blackwood said. "She opened with a very good time in the hurdles and overcame some back tightness in the high jump and shot put with a PR in the 200. We're very pleased with where she is sitting at this point in the competition."

Dupree, an All-American in this event in 2004 and 2005, matched Diana Pickler of Washington State with the fastest time in the opening event, the 100-meter hurdles, with a 13.25 clocking. Pickler, the NCAA leader entering the event, was later disqualified in the 200m, all but eliminating her from championship contention.

Dupree also cleared 5-6 1/2 in the high jump, measured 38-6 3/4 in the shot put and timed a wind-aided personal-best of 24.19 in the deuce to wrap up first-day action.

"Ryanne is very strong in two of the three events tomorrow, so if she can start strong in the long jump, which is probably her second-best event outside of the hurdles, she can have a huge meet," Blackwood said.

The second day of the heptathlon kicks off at 1:30 p.m. (CT) Friday with the long jump, followed by the javelin and 800m.
