SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? Senior Larry Brooks' quest to earn
All-America honors for the second time this season got off to a successful start on Wednesday at the
NCAA Outdoor Championships, as he advanced to the 800 meters semifinals.
Brooks,
an Indoor All-American in February, clocked a 1:49.39 in the third
heat and grabbed the 16th and final qualifying spot. The Stafford native posted the 12th-fastest
time of the day, but had to sweat out the results of the fourth and
final heat, as the top three finishers in each race and the next four
fastest marks were scheduled to advance. Thursday's semifinals are slated for 6:50 p.m. (CT).
"I am proud of Larry and the job he did today," head coach Aaron Fox said. "However, he knows there still is plenty of work to be done if he wants to reach his goal of becoming an All-American for the second time this season."
The other Roadrunners competitor, senior All-American
Brandon Butueax, stands in 21st place in the decathlon through five events with 3,633 points. The San Antonio native will be in action again at noon on Thursday.
