SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA men’s basketball program announced Sunday the addition of JohnMark Ludwick (San Antonio/Reagan HS) and Russell Permenter (Temple/Temple HS) to its spring signing class. The duo will join the Roadrunners on campus for the 2007-08 season.
“By signing JohnMark and Russell, we not only have added two quality basketball players, but two quality student-athletes,” head coach Brooks Thompson said. “Both are versatile players who had outstanding high school careers and we expect them to continue that success at this level. The fact that they are from this part of the state shows that local players have pride in their area school and want to come to UTSA and that is important for our program. Their addition makes this signing class deep and talented and we are looking forward to their arrival on campus.”
Ludwick, a 6-8 forward, posted 16.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while shooting 47 percent from behind the 3-point line and 87 percent from the free throw line as a senior for head coach Jimmy Littleton. He helped Reagan to a 24-11 overall record, a runner-up finish in the highly-competitive District 26-5A and the area round of the playoffs last year. Following the season, Ludwick was tabbed first-team all-state by the TABC and District 26-5A co-MVP along with Notre Dame signee Carleton Scott of Madison. He is ranked as the No. 44 senior prospect in the state by TexasHoops.com and recently played in the 42nd Annual Faith 7 Bowl Oklahoma vs. Texas All-Star Game on June 9 in Shawnee, Okla. Ludwick’s family relocated to San Antonio from Vancouver, Wash., last summer.
Permenter was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Bruce Etheridge at Temple High School. A 6-9 forward/center, he averaged 22 points, 14 rebounds and 6.6 blocks per game while shooting 65 percent from the field as a senior. He was named District 13-5A MVP and first-team all-district following the 2006-07 campaign. Rated No. 27 among the state’s high school seniors by TexasHoops.com, Permenter also played in the 42nd Annual Faith 7 Bowl Oklahoma vs. Texas All-Star Game on June 9. As a sophomore, Permenter helped the Wildcats to their second consecutive district championship and the regional semifinal round of the playoffs.
Both Ludwick and Permenter joined UTSA fall signee Devin Gibson (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) on the Texas roster for the Faith 7 Bowl Oklahoma vs. Texas All-Star Game on June 9, and all three shined. Permenter was named MVP of the Texas squad after posting a team-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Gibson grabbed a team-best eight boards and registered 11 points, four assists, one block and a steal, while Ludwick scored five points and pulled down four rebounds.
Other signees include Antoine Dade (Orlando, Fla./Jones HS/Iowa Western CC), Matt DeWaal (Compton, Calif./Dominguez HS), Omar Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz HS/Barton County [Kan.] CC) and Joey Shank (Folsom, Calif./American River College).
