Brooks to run at USA Outdoor Championships beginning Thursday

Larry Brooks

SAN ANTONIO ? Senior two-time All-American Larry Brooks, who just wrapped up one of the most successful seasons in UTSA men’s track & field history, will compete in the 800 meters at this week’s AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Brooks is scheduled to run in the second preliminary heat at 4:05 p.m. (CT) on Thursday at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Stafford native qualified for the meet last month when he clocked a school-record 1:48.44 at the Oxy Invite on May 12, which broke Sean Goetsch’s 12-year-old mark of 1:48.68 set in 1995. He completed a rare double for the Roadrunners this past year, becoming just the second male athlete to earn All-America accolades at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the same season. Former standout Justin Youngblood also performed the feat in 2004 in the heptathlon and decathlon. Brooks is one of four All-Americans in UTSA history along with Brandon Buteaux, Leonard Byrd and Youngblood.

He placed eighth at the national outdoor meet two weeks ago and that performance came on the heels of his third Southland Conference Outdoor Championship in the past four years last month. Brooks became the third All-American in school history during the indoor season, won his first SLC Indoor 800 meters title and also clocked a 1:48.72 at the Iowa State NCAA Qualifier to post his second school indoor record in as many years.

“Qualifying for the U.S. National Championships is a fitting culmination to an outstanding collegiate career,” assistant coach Scott Slade said. “It is a rare honor for a collegiate athlete to represent his university at the USA Championships and we hope to make UTSA proud. His experience competing at two NCAA Championships this year and earning All-American honors both times should give him some extra confidence going into this meet. Larry dared to dream big and make the commitment to trying to make those dreams come true this season and it's great to see all his hard work pay off.”
