Brannon inks free agent deal with Los Angeles Dodgers organization

SAN ANTONIO ? Senior Blake Brannon's dream of playing professional baseball recently came true, as he signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers following this year's Major League Baseball Draft. Brannon, a right-handed pitcher, was assigned to the Rookie League Ogden Raptors, who begin their season on Tuesday, June 19.

Brannon is coming off a senior campaign in which he posted a 3-5 record with 6.33 ERA in 58.1 innings of work. The Brenham native appeared in 13 games (all starts) and posted one complete game and 44 strikeouts. He finished the year strong despite missing a month with a nagging forearm injury, posting a 1.22 ERA and 10 strikeouts in his final four starts (22.1 IP).

"I am happy to see Blake get an opportunity to play professional baseball," UTSA head coach Sherman Corbett said. "I know it has been a dream of his and to see it come true is very exciting."

Brannon, who will shift to the bullpen for the Raptors, finished his four-year career with school-record 81 appearances and he also ranked among the top 10 in shutouts (three/third), strikeouts (181/sixth), innings pitched (261.1/seventh), complete games (six/eighth) and games started (33/ninth). He entered this season riding UTSA-record 29 scoreless innings streakand extended that stretch to 30 before giving up run againstLouisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 16.
