FRISCO ? Junior Luke Johnson was one of 12 student-athletes named to the 2007 Capital One/Southland Conference Men’s Track & Field All-Academic Team, the league office announced on Monday.
Johnson, who maintains a 3.59 grade-point average (gpa) in kinesiology, is coming off a season that saw him qualify for the NCAA Midwest Regional in both the shot put (16.85m/55-3 1/2) and hammer (56.60m/185-8). The Amarillo native broke his own school record in hammer in back-to-back meets (Angelo State Relays/Texas Twilight) and also placed fourth (54.20m/177-10) in the hammer at the SLC Outdoor Championships. In February, Johnson finished seventh (16.29m/53-5 1/2) in weight throw and helped lead Roadrunners to their second consecutive SLC Indoor Championship.
He owns UTSA’s weight throw record (16.40m/53-9 ?), ranks second on school charts in the indoor (16.60m/54-5 ?) and outdoor (16.85m/55-3 ?) shot put and also is runner up on the program’s discus ledger (51.03m/167-5).
Johnson is a two-time SLC Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection and has been a member of the UTSA honor roll in four of his six semesters, including earning Dean’s List honors in Fall 2006.
To qualify for the all-academic team, student-athletes must have a cumulative gpa of 3.00 or higher and participate in at least 50 percent of the team’s scheduled events. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible. Each member institution’s head coach, sports information director and academics coordinator are allowed to vote.
