UTSA Baseball adds Saltzgaber to 2008 signing class

SAN ANTONIO - UTSA head baseball coach Sherman Corbett announced Wednesday the addition of Derek Saltzgaber (Abilene, Texas/Wylie HS) to his 2007-08 signing class. He is the younger brother of current Roadrunners third baseman Ryan Saltzgaber.

"Derek is a versatile athlete who gives us the flexibility to play him at a number of positions," Corbett said. "Our program will benefit through his commitment on and off the field. I believe he has tremendous upside to improve throughout his career much like his brother, Ryan, has done the last three years."

Saltzgaber is a two-time all-district selection at both catcher and infielder for head coach Clay Martin. He hit .304 as a junior and helped lead the Bulldogs to the Texas 3A State semifinals. This season, Saltzgaber is hitting .451 (32-71) with six doubles, two triples, four homers and 31 RBIs. He is a member of National Honor Society and his twin brother, Nathan, will play at Ouachita Baptist University next season.

Saltzgaber joins Brett Aguilar (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS), Tyler Carpenter (Sugar Land, Texas/Ford Bend Elkins HS), Ryan Hutson (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS), John Patterson (Frisco, Texas/Grayson CC/Frisco HS), Jason Pearce (Sachse, Texas/Naaman Forest HS) and Kristopher Ruepke (Adel, Iowa/Iowa Central CC/ADM HS), all of whom signed during the 2006 early signing period in November.
