DES MOINES, Iowa ? Junior Cedric Harris stayed alive in the men’s 100 meters and helped the 4x100m relay team advance to the final to highlight a busy day for the UTSA men’s track and field team Friday at the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Harris clocked a 10.43 to finish a narrow second in his 100m preliminary heat behind Oklahoma’s Marcus Pugh (10.42). The Port Arthur native’s time was the sixth-fastest overall and moves him into Saturday’s 4:05 p.m. final. Fellow junior Steven Brown clocked a 10.58, but did not advance.
Harris and Brown combined with senior Scott Briscoe and freshman Tedy Williams for a season-best 40.19 clocking in the 4x100m relay. The quartet finished second in its heat and posted the sixth-best time of the day. Saturday’s final is slated for 3 p.m.
It was a busy day for Harris as he also timed a 23.93 in the 200m prelims but did not advance.
In other action, senior All-American Larry Brooks covered 800m in 1:49.24 to finish fifth in his heat, narrowly missing the final field of eight with the 11th-fastest time of the evening. Sophomore Gaston Griffin turned in a 47.70 in the 400m for 19th among preliminary entries.
In final field event action, freshman Mo Jackson leaped 21-5 ? for 13th in the long jump and junior Luke Johnson measured 170-4 for 21st in the hammer throw.
Saturday's action kicks off with the field events at 1 p.m. Senior Benson Cheserek will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase, freshman Johnathan Whittaker is entered in the high jump, while Johnson is in the shot put.
